In 2008, junior Matthew Bondy, then a seventh grader, began his bar mitzvah project by initiating correspondence with leaders of the Warm Hearts Foundation in an attempt to organize fundraisers for their organization. Four years later, Malawi parliament member Clement Chiwaya was sitting in his living room.

The Warm Hearts foundation is a United States organization that funds the creation of clean water wells in Malawi. After his election, Chiwaya became actively involved in the program’s efforts in his district.

On Oct. 7, Chiwaya arrived in the United States to thank individual benefactors and families who have played a significant role in the foundation. Because of their large contributions, Chiwaya stopped in Northbrook to thank the Bondy family personally.

“Matt is the only person of his age to donate so significantly,” Chiwaya said.

Bondy also organized a presentation given by Chiwaya at his synagogue, Temple Jeremiah in Northfield, on Oct. 15. Chiwaya spoke about the Warm Hearts Foundation and Bondy’s contribution to the organization, as well as general benefits of community service.

Chiwaya explained that Bondy’s age made his consistent leadership role special. He said that many times it was difficult for Malawians to conceptualize a student their age putting so much effort towards their well-being.

Bondy’s contribution to Warm Hearts did not stop with the end of his Bar Mitzvah. According to Bondy, after organizing a 5k walk and various other fundraisers for his original project, the Warm Hearts Foundation became the Northbrook Junior High “charity of choice” during the 2009-2010 school year.

“I’ve always wanted to do a lot of work for the Warm Hearts Foundation but [Chiwaya’s visit] definitely keeps me thinking about it,” said Bondy. “I’m as excited about my work for them as ever.”

Since the Warm Hearts foundation was created, they have funded the drilling of more than 250 wells. According to Chiwaya, each well that is drilled affects upwards of 1,000 people. Chiwaya said the Warm Hearts Foundation has come close to creating a sustainable water supply in his districts.

Chiwaya also said that the foundation is hoping to use their current fundraising methods to move towards other programs such as creating more schools, classes and scholarship programs.

Bondy plans to keep contributing as well. As co-president of the Global Citizens Club, he and other students intend to raise $1,400 to fund the Kwawatoto School in Kenya through a pizza sale and gift card raffle with local businesses.

Chiwaya plans to stay in America until Oct. 24. He plans to visit more sponsors, speak to similar groups about the Warm Hearts Foundation and share his ideas about community service.

“My belief is regardless of relationship there is a need to help those who are suffering,” said Chiwaya. “I am encouraged that you are able to impact the world in one way or another.”
