Point of Fact

  • Alumna (2010) Lindsey Heller organized a fundraiser on Dec. 22 in which she raised $2,300 for the Sandy Hook School Support Fund, which provides services to the Newtown and Sandy Hook community. At her fundraising table outside of La De Da in  Downtown Northbrook, Heller sold ribbons, held a silent auction and had materials available for supporters to make cards to send to the families of victims.

 

  • At this year’s Illinois Music Educators Association All-State convention and music festival, seniors Danny Gordon, Jared Hochberg, and Robert Blumstein were included as some of the best in state in their  instruments, according to band director Mark Running. Trumpeter Gordon and tenor saxophonist Hochberg were selected as the best jazz musicians for their respective instruments in the state. Blumstein was judged to be second best high school orchestral musician for the trombone in Illinois.

 

  • The second All School Workshop, Spartans Connect, is scheduled for March 20. The workshop is designed to allow students, staff and community members to share their passions with those interested through a wider variety of sessions than were available last year, according to John Finan, associate principal for administrative services. He also said that this year’s workshop allows more opportunities for underclassmen. After this year, the workshop is planned to occur every other year.

 

  • In accordance with student interest, the Board of Education approved new courses for the 2013-2014 school year. The board approved the addition of Sports Management in the Career and Life Skills Department and the expansion of Sports and Society in the Social Studies Department from a quarter credit summer school course to a semester credit course. The board also approved the additions a third level of Electronic Music and a fifth level of Modern Hebrew to allow students to continue their courses.

 

  • Members of the GBN speech team won awards at the IHSA State Tournament Feb. 15-17. Senior Amanda Mawrence won third place in Dramatic Interpretation, and junior Benji Englander and senior Ryan Wagner were ranked eighth and 12th respectively after preliminary rounds.
