The age of college shaming

I couldn’t believe it when my friends mistook the reputable Oberlin College, a school I was interested in attending, for Oberweis — the ice cream store. Yes, you heard me. They automatically assumed the liberal arts college was simply a we-take-everyone type of school. I realized then that “college shaming,” the judging of a school based on preconceived notions, has become a common phenomenon among students. Not all colleges are well-known, so why are people still critical? The quick-to-judge, ignorant comments need to stop. Next time you hear about a lesser-known college, keep an open mind. Don’t think about the reputation or prestigiousness of the college. Think about what you already know about the school and what you can still learn about it. Trust me, the “college shaming” bandwagon will be just fine without you.
