At 8:16 p.m. on Dec. 15, Head Coach Dominic Savino texted pitcher Bradley Margolin and third baseman T.J. Tedeschi about a “surprising” opportunity.

“[Savino] had told us for a little while that he had a surprise for us,” said Margolin. “So we were all trying to come up with what we thought it was. When I heard what it was, I was absolutely shocked.”

The “surprise” turned out to be that the varsity baseball team is scheduled to play at U.S. Cellular Field, home of the Chicago the White Sox, at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3. They will be playing against Nazareth Academy.

Savino said his friend Lee Milano, who is the head varsity baseball coach at Nazareth, called Savino asking if his team would want to play them at U.S. Cellular Field.

This is the first time any Glenbrook North baseball team has ever played at U.S. Cellular Field. The game will not be televised, but admission to the game is free.

Even though the stage has changed, Savino does not see the game as being any different.

“The game of baseball is the game of baseball,” said Savino. “That part is not going to change. It’s on a different venue and on a little nicer of a field, but the game itself stays the same.”

Imagining his first steps on the field, Margolin said he is going to try to take in the experience as much as possible.

“I will not want to leave easily,” Margolin said. “I’ll probably want to bring a tent and just camp out in the outfield.”

Tedeschi said he is excited to be playing on a field that major league players will have played on the same week.

“When you’re younger, you’re convinced you’re going to make the pros,” said Tedeschi. “But as you get older and older, you realize your dream gets smaller and smaller, until it becomes just a dream. But to actually get to play there and be part of the handful of people who [get] to play there is really special.”
