Teacher Feature of the Month: Jerry Kim ESL English Teacher

Unknowingly is the best way to put it. I’ve been teaching all sorts of things since I was 14 years old. I taught Tae Kwon Do for 16 years and I was in corporate training at Caremark/CVS many years ago. I taught ESL to senior citizens in Chicago for a couple of years and I was a private tutor for a while.

How do you spend your free time outside of school?
I lift weights daily. I love playing the drums and will rock out any chance I get. I also DJ from time to time. I’m a huge sports fan and love just about anything Bears, Bulls [and] White Sox. I also love to play sports whenever I get the opportunity. Oh, and I particularly enjoy debating with Mr. Hoynes about why Ford Mustangs are cooler cars than Chevy Camaros.

Do you have any interesting hobbies?
I used to be big into the import car [and] racing scene years ago. Ever seen “The Fast and The Furious”? That was my life. I don’t keep up with it as much but I still have a few connections in the scene nowadays so I keep up here and there. I’m also big on technology and trying to find all sorts of ways to use it. I have a couple of friends who are bodybuilders with whom I consult with as far as physical fitness goes. I’m not planning on doing any serious bodybuilding though because there’s just too much good food out there to deny myself. I also admit that I play “Madden 13” from time to time with some of my friends as well, and I’m also the reigning fantasy football champion in my league with an 8-1 record at the moment.

What’s the number one thing on your bucket list?
I think one thing I’d love to do is to blast down Germany’s autobahn network in a convertible. Oh, and to visit and take a picture in every single state in the United States.

What sports do you play?
Well I’m terrible at badminton, I’ll admit that. I used to make fun of it until a friend of mine in college hit me in the face with the… what do you call it?… birdie, because I was making fun of her. She was like WHAM and I was like “Okay, I’m never making fun of badminton again.” So definitely not badminton. I play football, basketball [and] softball. I tried to play soccer, but I don’t really like running that much. I know I cannot stand on ice. Ice skating or hockey, or even broomball. I’ve learned real fast that me and ice do not get along. I try to stay off the ice.

Do you sponsor any clubs here at GBN?
I sponsor the Fellowship Club, which is a Christian club. I’m also the sponsor of a recently formed Hip-hop Club. It’s brand spanking new, and we just started gathering names up. I used to breakdance and I used to be part of a dance crew and everything. This was before America’s Best Dance Crew, but I was big on dancing. Especially hip-hop and breakdance. We were the guys who would bust out the moves wherever we went. We had the boombox you would see back then; that was us. The guys dancing in the hallways? That was us. We danced everywhere we went.
