Twins in’klein’ed to be different

Sam and Toby

Senior Sam Klein said many teachers do not realize that he and senior Toby Klein are twins.

“It’s kind of all the same face where [there is] that shock when they put it together, and it’s like that light bulb that goes on after you figure out a puzzle,” Sam said.

Toby said that one of the perks of having a twin is being able to team up with each other and bargain with their parents.

Toby said when Sam got a Facebook in seventh grade, she waited a month so she could ask her Mom if she could have one too.

“My mom said no, but I said Sam already had one, so she allowed me to get a Facebook as well,” said Toby.

Carol Wagner, Toby and Sam’s mother, said the twins have a good relationship and are both very helpful to each other.

“They went to overnight camp, and Toby got homesick the first couple of nights,” said Wagner. “Sam was a champ because he was right there and helped her through it.”

However, Sam and Toby both said there are cons to being a twin.

Sam said having a sibling that close at school and at home sometimes causes them to bicker with each other.

Sam and Toby said that before they had their separate cars, they faced many challenges getting from place to place on their own. Sam said that one day he had to go to work after school, but Toby also needed a ride home.

Sam said that they both have packed schedules. Trying to schedule clubs, trips and work becomes a hassle.

Wagner said transportation used to be the biggest issue for Sam and Toby because of their busy schedules.

“We’re very fortunate that they each have transportation because a year or two ago, we were doing a lot of negotiating and scheduling,” Wagner said.

Toby said she would prefer having a twin as opposed to being separated in age with a sibling. Otherwise, she said she would not have someone who is always there for her and protects her. Toby said that when she has rough days, Sam sends her nice texts to let her know he is always looking out for her.

Sam and Toby agree that having a twin lets them know what the other is going through.

“I can only imagine that if one of my friends were going through something, it just gives me a lot more background for what Sam might be going through,” said Toby.

Both Sam and Toby agree that their parents treat the two as distinct individuals.

“They always have each other’s back, even when they’re aggravated with each other,” said Wagner. “[Having twins] is kind of fun and exciting.”

Sam and Toby said when the time comes to go to college, it will be difficult to separate after living together for so long.

“That’s gonna be weird, but I think it will be cool to see how we’ll both grow and communicate being across the country,” said Sam. “Being able to have someone who understands where you’re at in life and also being able to understand the events going on in their life is great.”
