A new Mariano’s Fresh Market is scheduled to open on the northwest corner of Skokie Boulevard and Dundee Road according to David Schoon, economic development coordinator of Northbrook.
Schoon said the new Mariano’s will attract shoppers from outside of Northbrook, who will contribute to additional retail sales tax collected by the Village and used to support municipal services.
James Hyland, vice president of Investor Relations and Corporate Communications of Roundy’s, the parent company, said the company looks to be an “integral part” of the neighborhoods it serves.
Although Mariano’s Fresh Market bought 11 of Safeway’s Dominick’s locations, “Mariano’s coming to Northbrook is a separate matter [from Dominick’s closing,]” Schoon said.
But according to freshman Ben Zhao, shoppers in Northbrook are still impacted by Dominick’s closing and the opening of a new grocery store. For example, he said his family now needs to travel farther to buy groceries.
“I’m upset Dominick’s is closing because it was really convenient for my family,” Zhao said.
Although Zhao’s usual grocery store has shut down, Zhao said he thinks Mariano’s holds promise and is willing to try shopping there once it opens.
“We would buy vegetables, fruit and meat [from Dominick’s] and hopefully we’ll be able to get the same quality stuff or even better from Mariano’s,” Zhao said.
Senior Angela Williams said she is also saddened by Dominick’s closing, but has had a positive experience at a Mariano’s in Chicago.
“The products have a better quality compared to Jewel and Dominick’s,” said Williams. “It may not be as cheap, but I know the food quality is great.”
Inside a Mariano’s store, Hyland said customers will find aspects distinct to the grocery store chain such as cooking stations, sushi stations, wood stone fired pizzas, specialty artisan cheeses and baked goods.
Some stores also offer full-service pharmacies, but it is undecided if the Mariano’s in Northbrook will have one.
Williams said that her family “would definitely be willing to try Mariano’s pharmacy over her regular one.”
According to Schoon, the building process is scheduled to begin during the spring of 2014, and the project will take approximately 12 months to complete. The store is set to open in 2015.
“My family and I are really excited for Mariano’s to come to Northbrook,” Williams said.
