Torch staff members recognized

Senior Chase Goldstein and alumna Sari Goldberg (’22) finished fifth in the country for News Story of the Year, and senior Alyssa Sanchez and alumna Baeyoung Yoo (’22) bothfinished in the Top 10 for Editorial Cartoon of the Year. 

The National Scholastic Press Association, also known as the NSPA, recognized these students.

Goldberg and Goldstein were honored for their article,“Florida prevents LGBTQ discussion in schools,”published on May 19, 2022.

Yoo was honored for her graphic in the opinion “Health comes before P.E. makeups,”published on Dec. 16, 2021. 

Yoo’s mom texted her about winning an award for one of her drawings and she was in utter shock after reading the message, Yoo said. 

Sanchez was honored for her graphic for the editorial “The pitfalls of the pink slip,” published on April 8, 2022. 

“The fact that we have students in our Torch program that are putting us out on the map nationally is unbelievable,” said Mike Tarjan, assistant principal of student activities. “Those kids worked really hard, expressing in words or in drawings about their stories, and to be recognized on a national level is just amazing.”
