The alarm sounded. The players scattered, leaving their coach to deal with the predicament.
On the morning of its first meet, in the parking lot of the Fox Run golf course in Elk Grove Village, the girls golf team was embarrassed by its coach’s struggle with the newly installed bus security system.
“I wasn’t aware of the safety button so before I turned the bus off, the car alarm started going off,” Michael Schroeder, head girls golf coach, said.
According to sophomore Amy Hong, Schroeder let the team walk on to the course while he called back to the school for help.
“It was a little bit of a rough start but I’m no stranger to embarrassment,” Schroeder said.
Although Schroeder has taught for 10 years, this is his first year as a golf coach. He was given the job this past May. According to Schroeder, he approached the school when the job opened up.
Schroeder said the team has had players step up and perform well. Freshman Emma Vickery shot an 84 at Pine Meadow Golf Club, in Mundelein, during the team’s Libertyville Invite. According to Schroeder that had been her best performance so far.
Hong said Schroeder has helped her improve her putting and chipping significantly.
“Different players have different needs,” said Schroeder. “I can relate to some of [my players’] frustrations because golf is such a fickle sport. I’m a golfer myself so I have the same ups and downs they have.”
