Glenbrook field hockey claimed the Illinois High School Field Hockey Association, also known as the IHSFHA, state title for the first time in the team’s history, ending the season 18-3-1, and beating New Trier for the first time this year in the state final.
“We’ve always talked about beating them, and it’s always been a goal at the beginning of every season, so to finally be able to do it in the game that mattered most was very cool,” junior Reese Anetsberger said.
Senior Madison Beach was recognized as the IHSFHA 2023 Player of the Year. She was nominated by Thomas Rosenbaum, head coach of the Glenbrook team. She received flowers and a plaque before the game began. This was Beach’s second year in a row receiving this award.
New Trier and the Glenbrook team were neck and neck for the first half of the game, leaving the score 0-0 at halftime.
Anetsberger scored theonly goal of the game in the third quarter, making thefinal score 1-0.
“When it went in, I did not believe it was real,” said Anetsberger. “There were so many things going through my head, I can’t even name one. It was all just super exciting.”
The team lost to New Trier two times this season. The first time, the team lost by two goals, and in the second, New Trier only beat them by one goal.
“I don’t want to say it was a perfect game, but it was a perfect effort from everybody,” said Rosenbaum. “And the defense was incredible. Starting from [sophomore] Charlie Stuart in goal to [freshman] Sarah Anetsberger being in the right spot at the right time, stopping what would have been the tying goal.”
