Movies for the spooky season

With Halloween approaching, a fall flick can set the mood for the spooky season. Below are three reviews of movies ranging from comedy to horror.

“Hocus Pocus”

High school student Max Dennison accidentally resurrects a trio of witchesafter disregarding his younger sister’s warnings about them. The witches feed off of children’s souls in order to remain youthful and immortal. To stop the witches, Dennison dashes off with the witches’ spellbook. What ensues is a reverse witch hunt through Salem, Mass. With great comedic timing and cooky characters, many can enjoy this movie. “Hocus Pocus” provides a fun-to-watch experience to get into the Halloween spirit without the horror aspects of the holiday.

“Coraline”

A mangy cat, a nosy neighbor and parents who don’t listen. Coraline’s world is far from ideal. So when a portal leads to a perfect world, Coraline finds herself a new, alternate home. However, this world is not what it makes itself out to be, and Coraline has to escape the wrath of her Other Mother in order to get back home to her real parents.This film provides viewers a surreal adventure through the animated movie’s setting, providing an eerie experience to viewers without unexpected scares.

“Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”

Found on YouTube ($3.99), Amazon Prime Video ($3.99), Hulu

Story-teller Sarah Bellows’ tales have haunted the small town of Mill Valley for generations. Children would go missing after hearing her stories. After Bellows’ death, the disappearances ceased to occur, but when a group of friends break into the old home and steal Bellows’ book, new tales magically appear in the book. When members of the group go missing, the ones remaining must find a way to defeat Bellows and her scary stories. This movie gets the job done with gut-wrenching and hair-raising scares that can leave viewers shaking in their boots.
