A virtual Lunar New Year event is scheduled to take place on Feb. 12, 2021, the first day of the 2021 Lunar New Year. The event is organized by sophomores Zoe Wang and Catherine Tang.

Several cultural clubs, including Foreign Films Club and Pan-Asian Student Society from Glenbrook North, as well as Chinese Club and Filipino Club from Glenbrook South, plan to help create and participate in this event, Wang said in a video conference.

According to Tang in a video conference, the event is scheduled to take place through two Zoom conferences that will occur simultaneously. In one conference, Foreign Films Club plans to screen share a movie about the Lunar New Year. In the other conference, clubs plan to share presentations about the Lunar New Year and lead interactive activities. Students will have the choice to attend either conference.

The idea to organize the event came to Tang while she was watching a dumplingmaking video that made her nostalgic for her Chinese traditions, she said. She wants students, including herself, to have the opportunity to celebrate the holiday.

I thought that if we could recognize Lunar New Year, it would give me and other people … a chance to celebrate,” Tang said.
