Glenbrook North received the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award from College Board on Feb. 9 for AP Computer Science Principles.
The award recognizes schools around the world that have at least 50 percent female exam takers in AP Computer Science Principles, AP Computer Science A or both, said Alesha Fox, executive director of AP Course and Program Innovation.
There were 1,127 schools that received this award for the 2022-2023 school year, Fox said.
According to Joseph Bruno, AP Computer Science Principles teacher, there were 23 female students in the class who took the exam last year out of 49 total students, which exceeded the criteria for the ratio needed to qualify for the award.
“It’s a negative connotation that [computer science] is a man’s field, and I’ve taught [this class] for several years and that’s not the case, some of the strongest students are females,” Bruno said.
