Stupid Cupid conquers the halls

As I stroll through the tightly-packed hallways, I’m surrounded by an abundance of relationships.

To my right a group of friends sit giggling at an inside joke. On my left a student talks to her teacher about make-up work. While I continue to walk down the hallway, the vision of a couple shamelessly making out blurs my vision.

An initial feeling of disgust surges through my body, making me want to cover my eyes as I continue walking. When I am making my way past the wall of love birds, I realize I’m more than just disgusted by the action, I’m embarrassed for the people doing it. The thought of those people’s teachers and peers catching sight of them kissing makes me cringe.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, high school couples make it their duty to express their affection by writing long Facebook posts, sending the famous “singing valentines” or delivering flowers or chocolate. The unspoken Valentine’s Day “treat” is the vast amount of Public Displays of Affection (PDA) associated with it.

As I begin to notice the smooching and embracing taking place around the school environment more and more, my overall feeling of discomfort and humiliation for the “smoochers” grows drastically.

I’m not against the idea of people showing their love for one another, but there is a place and there is a time. The middle of the hallway during passing period is neither that time nor that place. Couples should share their affection while on dates or during their own time, but while in public, they are exposing themselves to possible complaints and grievances from their observers.

When I’m making my way to class, I don’t want to be suffocated by the amount of “love” around me. PDA levels are at an extreme high in the halls of our school around Feb. 14. What happened to the days when I could casually roam the halls of our school without being bombarded by couples hooking up or caressing each other’s faces?

“Lovey dovey” couples should become more aware of their surroundings because their actions may lead to a large amount of discomfort for the rest of the student body. Not to mention, their actions can lead to an unsettling feeling for the teachers who wander the hallways as well.

This Valentine’s Day, the typical candy and roses will have to do during the school day, because nobody wants to stand and observe Cupid in action.
