Boys golf wins trophy
After having a rough first day at the state tournament playing in cold temperatures and heavy winds, the boys golf team battled back, shooting lower scores and hitting better shots on the second day of competition. The team finished third in state, with seniors Jason Gordon and Robby O’Regan placing in the top 10 on Oct. 7 and Oct. 8.
“After the first day, I kind of felt like we were out of it,” said O’Regan. “But I still thought that if we all played well [the second day], it could happen.”
According to Gordon, the team went on a hot streak at the start of the season winning most early matches, but as the season progressed, the team began to lose momentum and were outplayed at the state tournament.
“Towards regionals, sectionals and state, we were playing well as a team, but we couldn’t really close off on this really good season,” said Gordon. “Third place isn’t bad, but it’s not first.”
At the state tournament, O’Regan shot 79 on the first day and 70 on the second. Gordon shot 75 on the first day and 74 on the second. Both O’Regan and Gordon tied for 10th place individually and the team finished in third place.
O’Regan and Gordon have verbally committed to play Division I golf at Penn State University and the University of Michigan, respectively.
Both O’Regan and Gordon led the team to success at state, head coach Justin Gerbich said.
“They’ve been solid players all season, our two main guys,” said Gerbich. “They led us to our third place win [and] both tied for 10th, so they were [awarded] All-State.”
