The girls basketball team won the regional title for the first time in 31 years, beating Evanston Township 62-52 on Feb. 15 at Niles North.
The team was down by eight points in the first quarter but came back in the second quarter to win the game.
This was the team’s second time ever winning regionals. The last time the team won, girls basketball placed second in conference overall, losing to Maine West.
“It’s always so fun to go against [Evanston] because we knew it was going to be a tough game,” said senior Cait Ethen. “So beating them in regionals was so redeeming because they beat us in regionals a couple years ago.”
The team played Evanston twice before the regional game, losing the first game by seven and winning the second by three.
The Spartans (23-8) were led in scoring by junior Alexis Myers who averaged 14.5 points per game, and Ethen led the team in rebounding with 8.1 rebounds per game.
The team placed fourth in conference and lost to Loyola Academy in the sectional semifinal game at Maine South at Feb. 20.
Myers was named all-conference, and Ethen was awarded the Sportsmanship Award by the IHSA.
Myers was chosen because of her offensive performance throughout the season, head coach Nick Capalbo said.
