As I reflect upon my Torch career, I am repeatedly reminded of a six-word message a former Torch editor shared with me my junior year.
“Leadership doesn’t come with a title,” he said.
I took that statement to heart and was determined to uphold the honor of being a Sports Editor. Even though I had not received one of the roles I desired that year, I remained passionate about meaningfully contributing to this newspaper. I learned that being a member of Torch was not just about me or the position I held but also a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to spread awareness in my community. I was not going to overlook that. I came into senior year empowered, knowing I had a chance to make a difference. I had a voice in my community. I had to use it.
Looking back on all I have contributed to Torch, I can say that I successfully fulfilled this opportunity. Informing readers about the health impacts of zero-calorie drinks was not an easy article to write but included necessary and important information for the community. Writing about the Accelerated Placement Act and its effect on our school was likely the toughest article I have ever written during my time in Torch because of the amount of verifying, and the complexities of the topic were unmatched to any previous article I had written. But I remained dedicated to ensuring all information was accurate, knowing there was an audience waiting to receive it.
As this is my last time writing for the Torch, I am grateful to have written 14 articles across all five sections. From these experiences, I developed an inquisitive mindset that opened me up to important topics without having to stay silent. As a Sports Editor, I still had a voice that could positively improve many aspects of the newspaper. I looked to inspire others and be a motivational figure, encouraging the best out of everyone. I recognized the importance of being a part of such a well-respected newspaper that I wanted to continue the Torch legacy of producing high-quality journalism.
I am thankful for the last three years in this community, as I learned that regardless of what titles I hold in my future, I can continue raising awareness on important topics. Do not be dejected when something does not go the way you want it to. Instead, respond by working even harder. Consider the goals you are working towards, not just the recognition you get for achieving them. And remember that anyone can make a positive impact. Anyone can make a difference. You do not need a title to do so.
